PRINCESS ANNE, MD (July 23, 2024) – Mr. Shelton Handy, former Assistant Principal at Washington Academy & High School (WAHS), was recently named the school’s new Interim Principal after the departure of former Principal, Mr. Tony Bevilacqua, at the end of the 2023-2024 school year. Now entering his eleventh year in education, Handy began his career with Somerset County Public Schools (SCPS) teaching 8th through 12th grade math at WAHS. In the 2021-2022 school year, Handy joined the school’s leadership team; serving as WAHS’ Dean of Students for one year before being promoted to Assistant Principal in 2022-2023 where he served for two years.
During his tenure as Dean of Students and Assistant Principal at WAHS, Handy focused on creating opportunities for students to visit colleges, and implemented a “House System” modeled upon the Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) framework to improve school culture for WAHS’ students and staff. Handy also developed a parent group with the goal of cultivating strong connections with students, staff and families to ensure a supportive and inclusive school community.
Handy shared, “I have a passion for the students, staff and the community of Washington Academy and High School, and I am excited to serve in this new capacity. Academic achievement and creating an inclusive school culture are major priorities as I step into my new role as Interim Principal.”
Handy and his administrative team will spend the remainder of the summer preparing for the 2024-2025 school year, which begins on September 3, 2024.
